CREEPY CLASSICS presents...

MOVIE NIGHTS

Every weekend we're watching movies together...whether you're in Pennsylvania USA, or Sydney Australia. It's a throwback! Back to the days when you had the anticipation for waiting till the weekend to see the classic horror or science fiction film that was listed in the TV Guide. The plan is to watch a movie at 7:30PM on Saturday night in your own time zone. Or, if you can't Saturday night...anytime during the weekend. Then, we'll all get together and e-mail our thoughts on the film...a few paragraphs...or simply a sentence if you'd like. They after-viewing reviews appear on our Creepy Classics/Monster Bash News Page. See the latest thoughts posted by viewers ther now.

MAN-MADE MONSTER (1940) Dynamo Dan (Lon Chaney) is a side show entertainer who transforms into a luminescent monster thanks to Lionel Atwill as an evil doctor. Chaney's life is toast after Atwill experiments on him....then everyone he touches is toast. Great performance by Chaney.

Man Made Monster (1940)

Saw this when I was a kid and have always loved it. A real sentimental monster flick from Universal. The real monster is the deliciously diabolical Lionel Atwill!

It was Chaney's first movie as a "monster." I don't count his caveman from ONE MILLION B.C. as an actual monster.

Plus, my favorite Universal scream queen - Ann Nagel is in it! You have an obnoxious newspaper reporter that was standard fare in the 1930s and 1940s.

Chaney realy shines in this as a good ol' boy with pathos. And, hey, who could forget "Corky" the dog. Never get tired of this.

I watched MAN MADE MONSTER this weekend starring the great LON CHANEY JR ,& as usual... totally enjoyed it!  I'm still amazed at how incredible the special effects that made Dynamo Dan glow were. Definately ahead of it's time for the 1940's. I always felt this was an underrated performance by Chaney Jr. He portrays Dan McCormick with Lennie like innocence at the beginning of the film. You later see the Larry Talbot tortured soul, & finally the fierce, awesome power of the Frankenstein Monster...all rolled into one! Hat's off to a fine supporting cast, & of course no one can play sinister like LIONEL ATWILL !!  It definately CHARGED me up & made for an ELECTRIFYING evening of Classic movie watching! Hope you all enjoyed it as well!

You know, it makes me wonder if Universal executives used this film as a "test" to see if Lon Chaney, Jr. miight be right for the Frankenstein Monster in THE GHOST OF FRANKENSTEIN the following year. We know that Boris Karloff said that he had had enough of playing the Monster after SON OF FRANKENSTEIN. So, that just makes me wonder .... !

The film is sure helped by a good cast, Hans J. Salter's great score - some bits of it would be reused for THE WOLF MAN - and the special effects by John P. Fulton and his staff are ... heh, heh .. SHOCKINGLY GOOD! Anne Nagel looking so sad and pretty could have been a nice "love interest" for Dan had not the diabolical Lionel Atwill character have other intentions in mind. Atwill is great in this film, and so is young Lon! It's an underrated classic in my book!
